Persecution Grows

Acts 12:1–5 (NASB95)  

1Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. 2And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword. 3When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. Now it was during the days of Unleavened Bread. 4When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out before the people. 5So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God. 

In this brief yet poignant passage, we encounter a dark moment in the early Church when a powerful ruler, intent on pleasing his Jewish constituents, escalates the persecution of God’s people. The narrative recounts the execution of a trusted messenger of Jesus, swiftly followed by the arrest of another beloved servant. The intent behind these harsh measures is to suppress the growing influence of the Gospel and intimidate those who proclaim the Good News. Yet, even as human power and popular sentiment seek to silence the Church, we are reminded that God’s purposes remain unthwarted. The actions of this ruler, though seemingly decisive in the realm of man, only highlight the contrast between finite human authority and the eternal sovereignty of God. The unfolding events serve as a powerful testimony that even in the midst of oppression, God is working behind the scenes, preparing the way for renewed hope and the expansion of His Kingdom. 

In our own times, our community may face pressures from political forces, cultural trends, or social divisions that seem aimed at stifling the witness of Christ. These unfolding challenges encourage us to remain steadfast and trust in God's unchanging authority.  

I have a question for each of you: when adversity arises, where do you seek answers and support? Pay attention to where Peter and the church found theirs. 

When adversity strikes, let our response be characterized by prayer, solidarity, and courageous commitment.
